Crime-Thriller movies have the ability to pull your attention in a way that no other genre can manage. Hollywood has mastered the making of these movies. The Ocean series, the bank job, the Italian job, Now you see me, Usual Suspects, Ordinary Decent Criminal, Entrapped, Die hard or Lethal weapon series - these and many more successful movies are testament to that fact. Hindi cinema, however, has fallen woefully short in providing adequate competition in this area. Barring a few refreshing features like Johny Gaddar, No one killed Jessica and Kahani; the crime-thriller movies are reduced to nothing but a poor remake of a foreign films.
Ghanchakkar has surprised me unexpectedly. Firstly, because I can't place it as a remake of any Hollywood film. So, it appears as an original work. Secondly, all actors have underplayed their roles and the highlight of the film is it's storyline. Even with flamboyant star cast of Emraan Hashmi and Vidya Balan, every character in the film is provided with due importance. Film is filled with tongue-in-cheek humour and there are moments wherein you can't stop laughing out loud. Vidya has maintained her figure and mannerism of "The Dirty Picture" while Emraan seems to have decided to play the boy-next-door. The comparison might be way off the chart but in many scenes he reminds of the old Amol Palekar.
Story in itself is funny and non-conventional. Emraan is an expert lock breaker who lives retired life with his ultramodern Punjaban wife, played by Vidya. Vidya once again shows her exceptional talent of mastering any character. She truly is the method actor or highest class. Anyway, one day Emraan gets a big job from Pandit and Idris, played by Rajesh Sharma and Namit Das. Rajesh is a well known face with lovely performances in No One Killed Jessica and Special 26 however, Namit is relatively new. Pandit and Idris provide a barrage of non-stop comic moments and situations from start till end. Well, after convincing Emraan to take up the job, all three of them head to loot a bank. They wear paper masks of Dharmesh, Amitabh and Utpal Dutt. You will have to watch the film to realize how hysterically comic the situation becomes. Well, with a few ups and downs, these gentlemen manage to scrap off over 30 crore rupees from the bank and the money is handed over to Emraan for safekeeping for 3 months. After the said time elapses, Pandit and Idris contact Emraan to split their share. Emraan however had met with an accident and lost his memory. Real fun starts from here. Story have too many twists and turns, as there should be, and we cannot understand who is conning whom. By the end of the movie, director provides resolution to most characters and unlike Hindi movie style, closes the movie with no clear win or lose for the lead actors.
Like the film itself, there has been no loud noise of its promotion or post-release success and box office numbers. I suspect, with our audience, this film might not have earned big money. Although, it has a potential to pick up and attain reasonable triumph eventually.
