Film – 3 Idiots
Director – Rajkumar Hirani
Cast – Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi and Boman Irani.
Alllllllllllllllllll Isssssssssssss Welllllllllllllllllll
The slogan / song from latest - Vidhu Vinod Chopra – Rajkumar Hirani – Aamir Khan - movie has been an instant hit, just like the movie itself. These 3 geniuses have produced the biggest blockbuster of the year 2009. Many consider this as the greatest hit of last decade and the box office numbers are proving them right.
The movie is one of the finest entertainers of Hindi Cinema in recent years. Let me take you through the story. 3 Idiots is a story of friendship, hope, desires and goodness of life.
Rancho, who is a rebellious kid, does not believe in traditional teaching methods. He asks questions and confronts the system instead of blindly following. He believes in learning and not just studying. He motivates his friends to look beyond ordinary and soon earns the wrath of director Viru Sahasrabudhhe (Boman Irani).
Despite promoting fun & frolic and almost daily missing classes, Rancho manages to top the class!!! He even manages to win the affections of the director’s daughter Pia (Kareena Kapoor) – obviously :)
But our hero’s greatest achievement is making his friends realize their heart’s calling. Well, there is a twist in the story. Rancho disappears suddenly on the graduation day.
Years later, Farhan (R Madhavan) & Raju (Sharman Joshi), begin a journey to find their long lost friend. And, as usual, all is well in the end.
The film is loosely based on a book by Chetan Bhagat – 5 point someone. Although there have been many disputes on this issue, I would say that ‘The best parts of the movie are from the book. Rest all is typical bollywood.’
Nobody denies the brilliance of storytelling by Rajkumar Hirani or Aamir Khan but you can’t help the feeling of repetition. This movie is more like an extension of Munnabhai series. The music sounds the same as in the original series. The slogan ‘All is well’ carries shadow of ‘Jadu ki jhappi’ and ‘Gandhigiri / Vinamrata’ – all of these are intensely catchy. Even our director Viru Sahasrabudhhe is another version of Dean J. Asthana.
Even with these similarities, story manages to grip the audience till very end and entertains them – so no harm done. But a fan will definitely complaint on wasting talents like Madhavan, Sharman and Boman – remember the scene from ‘Lage raho munnabhai’ where he convinces Sanjay Dutt to take the heroin and her family to Goa – unbelievable hilarious.
Then again, no one will complaint after delivering such a block buster and the movie will be a plus point in everybody’s career.
Another remarkable point to observe is the marketing of the movie. Almost everyone is convinced that the movie gives a great social message, especially to the young students, to listen to ones heart & strive towards it. I know it’s a good thing to say but that’s it, a good thing to say. Movie gives no such message, at least to me. It’s pretty obvious that Rancho has a super human talent and any normal parent would think that such a guy can only be a bad influence on their kids. It is hard to digest that someone can achieve top grades with no study apparently, who would want to give their kid this message??? Even after so many disputes about who gets the credit, I would like to add that the book by Chetan Bhagat is infinitely better entertainer than this movie.
Except this criticism, the movie is complete ‘paisa vasool’. So, don’t worry and go and enjoy the movie. It’s said that laughter is the best medicine and we can agree that Rajkumar Hirani always prescribes an overdose :)
And if you really want a take away message, the movie offers you this - "Don't run after success, strive for excellence. The success will follow"
